Maybe,
a little
like meeting God
through feather, fur, or fluttery thing.
To be judged not for words
but by the timbre of my voice.
Not for ability
but by gentleness of my touch.
And not for knowledge,
but by the Light that shines from my eyes.
To be loved
for the nature of my heart.
A Contemplation Seed
You are invited to reflect on the spiritual messages in this story by contemplating on this passage from Animals Are Souls Too!, by Sri Harold Klemp:
When you need to open your heart to love, try this spiritual exercise. Not only will it help open your heart, but it will help to keep it open.
The technique involves attitude, and it is one that must be lived. In a word, it’s called gratitude.
It is a joy to be around people who live by this principle. They know what they’ve got is precious, even if it does not amount to much materially. Most of all, they have the gift of life. And because they appreciate this gift and feel grateful for it every day, they also have the gift of love.
Animals, too, have an awareness of this principle and often express it in ways we can understand.
So throughout the day, contemplate on all the blessings in your life.
This practice will help you begin to recognize your own individuality as Soul and the incredible love that God has for you. And as you see and accept the love of God, you will learn to love yourself more. Then you can love others more, be they human or animal.
Thanks Sharon! Whew, what a heart opener! Great way to start a spiritual exercise. It tickles my heart strings!
What a beautiful reminder. A gentle hug to say “remember what is important” – thank you
I was s?o inspired by this poem that I decided to share it with others. I sent it to some friends via email, but my neighbor, who was the first person I thought to share it with, is not computer literate. So I printed it out for her. She has a wonderful relationship with her little dog–a ball of brown fur and love. I gave it to her as I went out for my morning walk.
Later on, I was in my front yard, watering the grass. Pretty soon, she saw me. She took her dog off the leash and a ball of love can racing toward me a top speed. We greeted each other as old friends. The lady made her way over to my house and said in wonderment, “I read that poem. Who would ever look at animals like that? She went on to tell me how much she loved having conversations with her dog, who, she was certain, understood her every word. I agreed because he understands the language of love, and that is universal.
Thanks again for this loving story!
This morning, I gave a printout of this story to my neighbor across the street. She’s in her 80s, and her little dog is her friend and constant companion. They are a loving and inseparable pair!
After I handed her the copy, I went off on my walk. An hour or so later, I was in my front yard, watering the grass, when she let her dog off leash and he went bounding up to me–a little ball of brown fur. She followed (more slowly). She had read the story and was overwhelmed! “Who would ever have thought of such a thing!” she exclaimed. The whole notion of it was new to her. She went on to tell me how her dog always seemed to know what she was saying. I said, “I don’t think it’s your words that he hears, but your love. It’s a language that we all speak.
She stayed and chatted with me for the next half hour, but even the dog wanted to go it–it was approaching 90 at 9:00 a.m., and he was finished visiting.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful story. So much love!
