One summer morning, I left my house to run some errands. As I drove down Minnetonka Boulevard in a suburb of Minneapolis, I saw a mallard hen in the median strip of the highway. It looked as if she’d been hit by a car but was still alive and flapping her wings. I decided to try to help her.

Several years ago I lost my sweet-tempered beagle, Hanna, to old age. My heart felt a bit empty without her love. Each morning I’d wake up and sing HU, which is a love song to God. I’d ask my inner guide for help with my grief.

On a warm, sunny afternoon, accompanied by our little Australian shepherd dog, Sadie, I was cleaning the chicken pen, feeding the chickens, and handing out daily afternoon treats. Unexpectedly I heard a goose flying low over the top of my head. It landed in front of our house on a nearby field.
